Another Assault

I don't want to start a crusade here on the blog about youth violence, but there are things that must be mentioned, have to be talked about. This appeared in the Key West Citizen on Thursday. It's on the front page of Key West the Newspaper with this picture.

The Citizen article refers to the two who punched and kicked the woman and took her purse as "men". KWTN uses the term "young men". The victim herself described them as being "around 14-15 years old".

Local attorney Mick Barnes wrote to the City Commission and asked that they put an item on their agenda to have a discussion in the open, a dialogue with the community about the problem and what ought be done about it. Mick is right. He says in his recommendation that the purpose of the dialogue ought to be, " ...to learn the extent of this situation in Key West and offer the Chief of Police your support, advice and suggest the priority that his response should have.    I suggest the Mayor sponsor the item, because I believe that this should be treated as a community concern and not only the concern of one or two districts."

Today's Citizen carriesan article with the headline, Visitors urged to be careful with valuables during stay. It's directed at visitors in for Fantasy Fest and talks about a variety of risks and the need to be aware of your surroundings and the need to avoid risky behavior with people you don't know well. It's all good advice. But, the woman at Mallory Square probably felt safe up until the moment the two thugs confronted her. I doubt that she'll feel safe again on the street, at least not for a long time.
