Key Westers

I found a treasure trove of historical information at a web site operated by the Florida Center for Library Automation. They have catalogued and made available thousands of documents and photos about Florida of the past, including some interesting stuff about the Keys and Key West.

This link is to a chapter of New and Greater Key West, Florida told in Picture and Story, a 32 page pamphlet from sometime between 1912 and 1914, as nearly as I can tell.

An excerpt: All things considered, the people of Key West, while lacking in much, will compare favorably with the people of any other place. The women are modest, accomplished and beautiful; the men gallant, courageous and intelligent; and all are polite, kind and considerate of the rights of others.

A large collection of photos from the time are interspersed throughout the document. It's a fascinating look back.
