Deep in the Heart of Texas

I'm on a brief trip to Austin, Texas, designed to completely surprise our daughter, Susan, on the occasion of her 40th birthday. I arrived here on Friday afternoon, in time for Susan's surprise party at Dave & Buster's, attended by family, friends and co-workers. Susan says that Dave and Buster's is like a Chuck E. Cheese for adults.

Later that evening, we drove to the airport to "reclaim my lost luggage", and surprised Susan again with the unexpected arrival of her sister, Betty, from New Hampshire on a late flight.

On Saturday we went to the parking lots at Texas Memorial Stadium for a tailgate party with Susan and Rick's friends and family. The parties are a tradition for them before every home game.

Rick's boss got us four tickets on the 50-yard line for the game against North Texas University. We watched from the stands for most of the first half of the game (which UT won 56-7), but the near 100 degree temperatures sent us back to the relative cool of the tailgater tent to watch the rest of the game on one of two TV's hooked to a satellite receiver (these folks know how to tailgate).

Betty flies back to Boston today, and I return to Key West tomorrow, after a pleasant reunion with our two daughters. Kudos to Janet for staying behind to hold down the fort and care for Maggie so I could take part in Susan's surprise. The next visit will be hers.
