Key West Ambassadors

The 12th Key West Ambassador Academy class starts Jan. 15, according to the city. Saturday is the deadline to apply.

Elected officials, department directors and other city staff host the free, 14-week course, held Thursdays from 1:15 to 4:30 p.m., which teaches citizens how the city operates. Each graduate receives a certificate of completion, a shirt and a pin. Participants also go on two-hour "ride-alongs" with police, parking and code enforcement officials and are expected to attend at least one City Commission meeting. Apply for the course online by Saturday.

Completed applications may be faxed or dropped off at the city manager's office as indicated on the bottom of the form. Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance. For more information, e-mail keywestambassadoracademy@gmail.com or call 305-394-1037 or 305-295-8261.

The Key West City Ambassador Corps now numbers a couple of hundred graduates. Class number 11 just ended, and class number 12 begins in a week. I graduated from the academy in June of 2005, and I can recommend it highly to anyone wanting to really understand how the City works.

As a graduate of said Class 11, I too can highly recommend it. No better way to get a look into how this City is run, and to get to know those who keep it going. The subsequent Abassador Luncheons are also great for "networking" with other motivated folks from this town.
